Facts About the Native American people

 They are proud people.
The majority are poor.
They are a secluded society
for the most part.The U.S.
government policy towards
Native Americans reflects one
theme;gain control of tribal
assets.In the past Congress
has systematically removed
assets from tribal ownership, reduced tribal control of assets and redirect
their benefits to outside interest. It is true some tribes have benefited
from their very own casino's and business's.But for those who
live on the Reservations have not been so lucky. The poverty rate
is high.Alcholism and depression is prevalent.Due to their diets
many have diabetes and heart conditions. And do not live to a ripe old
age.Our government on some reservations created something called
"the live stock reduction act"Keeping ownership of cattle, sheep
and horses being allowed to own down to a minimum.Which then makes it hard to raise enough
animals to have some to sell.Which also contributes to no
income.Reservations for the most part were put in the worst spots, land no one else wanted because
of bad farming land and poor grazing land.
There are no real airports or railroad nearby.Which makes it hard to
do any type of business. There for their unemployment rate is very
high.Unlike most Americans they can not
recieve bank loans for houses to be put on
the reservations.Because banks are unable to
reposses or foreclose on any house on a
reservation. So they live in whatever they can
afford.Be it shacks,trailors or Hogans.
We don't normally hear about their struggles. Some would
say they are the forgotten people.
