A TURKEY AT WAWA

We received a call from our volunteer Susan that volunteer Ruth received several turkeys from the Methodist Church in Cookstown. All we had to do was pick them up.So Fr John and I met Susan. The turkeys would go to the few families on our list.On the way home we stopped at Wawa so Fr John could get some coffee. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot we noticed an old beat up car ...with 3 bald tires with New York plates. We both said to each other wonder how that car made it to New Jersey. Then laughed since we both had been thinking the same thing. While in the store I noticed 3 children with sweaters on and 2 of the girls had sandals on the boy had beat up sneakers with no socks.Meanwhile Fr John was getting his coffee.
The children were pestering their mom for some bubble gum.The boy said"mom we can share the gum .The mom in return said"look I have just enough money for a sandwich for your dad in the car. After all he did all that driving and we still have to get to New York.(What do you know these people were in that broken down car I thought).I went up to the lady as she was in line counting pennies, nicles and quarters for the sandwich she had ordered.I said"excuse me may I speak with you for a moment? She said"sure what is it?I told her how we were given several turkeys and for the life of me I didn't know how I could fit them all in our small freezer. And if her and her family would like to take it off my hands.By then the children were jumping up and down for joy yelling TURKEY yum ,yum.Oh get it mom we haven't had meat in awhile. The mom said"she would discuss it with her husband when we got out to the parking lot .Well they were thrilled to take it off our hands. The husband gave me a hug that almost cut off my breath.,They had gone to Cape May to his best friends funeral and only stopped at the Wawa so the children could use the bathroom. They met Fr John.He told them if they gave us their address we could later maybe send them some items that the children could use.But they wouldn't hear of it.So when we left
first thing we had to do was stop at grocery store and buy another turkey.,lol

I remember

Fr John often thinks of others before himself. Why I remember the time he had so much trouble breathing that I took him to Kimball Hospitol in Lakewood. It had snowed the night before about 5 inches and the roads were so icy .Since Fr John has COPD he oftens visits the E.R. usually a couple of breathing treatments and a shot while on oxygen and he is able to go home .But this day he seemed to be in ...more distress than before. The doctors said"they were going to keep him for a few days since the breathing treatments weren't working as well as they had expected. While Fr John gasped for each breath we noticed a pregnant woman who walked by his room. She had flip flops on and a sweater. Right there I knew what Fr John was thinking while he kept tapping me on my arm pointing to the woman. He wanted me to see if this woman might need some assistance starting with shoes.
So I walked over to the woman who was concerned about her sister who had been taken via ambulance earlier. She was a pleasant woman and looked to be about 30 yrs old .She told me her and her sister could both need some help once her sister gets out of the hospital. She gave me her phone number and then she kept saying"you really will give us some clothes and shoes right? I told her if we didn't have any in our garage knowing Fr John we would buy them. After seeing how poorly she was dressed for the weather how could we not.I went back and told Fr John she was more than appreciative. In fact she was so happy she added her sister needed stuff too.Fr John smiled and told me "now don't forget she will need baby clothes since she is pregnant.
It took us about a week but we delivered the stuff.Thats right Fr John was out of the hospital in a few days and he went for the delivery.
You would of thought we were celebrities the way they were acting when we arrived. Especially after they found out Fr John was a priest. They wanted us to come in and visit. They wanted to even cook us something. Fr John asked"what do you have in mind to make, they told him they could make a pasta dish.So how could we say no ,we enjoyed our 1 hour visit. It was the longest I have ever spent doing a drop off so far.But the company and food was good.
It always amazes how caring Fr John is even when he is not feeling well himself. So you see I never know how those E.R. visits might go.Maybe next time I will drawl the curtain, lol

BOB

BOB FROM BROWNS MILLS NJ
Bob emails us several times a year letting us know who he thinks might need some items. He never asks for himself. The first time we met Bob it was at the Acme parking lot in Browns Mills. He had a car that looked like it saw better days. He looked like he needed a shave and had a very worn looking jacket on.He wanted us to possibly bring some Christmas presents to a mom with 2 young children staying at a local motel. We asked what the ages and sex were of the children and what room were they staying at. After he gave us the information we assured him we would put them on our list. The real reason for meeting him was he had originally emailed us asking for a blanket and some socks for someone who he knew was homeless. We never asked him how he knew these people. After all we were just happy to help. Over the past 5 yrs we have helped those who Bob has directed us to. We have not heard from Bob this past year but,we just recently found out that he himself was homeless and living in his car. He often went to St Anns church at the food pantry and some of the items he received he gave to others. When he slept in his car at nights he would park behind a blueberry farm. It amazes us to think someone who was in a dire situation himself never thought of his own needs but others. People like Bob are a true blessing. Unselfish, compassionate and caring .Makes one wonder how he became homeless. Was it he just gave up on life, had he lost his home or have an addiction problem or perhaps had a mental illness. We will never know what happened to Bob but we are sure wherever he is he is looking out for others.
